A Book Review: The First Christmas Night by Keith Christopher

"'Twas the very first Christmas,

When all through the town

Not a creature was stirring -

There was not a sound."

Ages: 3 - 7

Grade Level: Preschool - 3

Location: Bethlehem, Israel

Pages: 32

Time Period: Around 4 B.C.

Using the well-known “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” poem as a model, “‘Twas the Very First Christmas” tells of the night that Jesus Christ was born. The book is super fun to read aloud and the oil paintings do a good job in conveying first the quietness and then the absolute joy that comes when Jesus is born.

“The Biblical Story of the First Christmas” in the back has passages from the King James Bible (that the inner material is based on). I recommend reading these passages as they add to the book.

Note: It is very likely that the Wise Men did not visit Jesus at the manger since Matthew 2:11 describes the Wise Men finding Jesus and His mother in a house instead of a stable. Jesus is also referred to as a “young child” instead of a baby multiple times throughout this chapter.
