"I will write the second Declaration of Independence.... An American spelling book!"

Ages: 6 - 9

Grade Level: 1 - 4 Pages: 32

Time Period: 1700s - 1800s

Noah Webster & His Words by Jeri Chase Ferris is a quirky picture book about a passionate American patriot, educator, and author who had a huge impact on the American education and language. Noah Webster was born in Colonial America in 1758 and grew up during the American Revolution. Zealous about his young country, Webster wanted to further separate the new "Americans" from England and to promote unity among the 13 states. So he began to write, and write, and write! Webster wrote many of the first American schoolbooks and would later work on his biggest project yet (the one he is most well-known for) - Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language. This picture book wonderfully captures the life of a figure whose ideas and pen shaped the United States of America.

I really liked this book. For me the quirky, unique, scribbly illustrations were a big part of that enjoyment. I also really enjoyed learning about the man behind the first American dictionary and the "blue-backed speller" (that name may ring a bell for avid history readers). I highly recommend reading the timeline in the back (which covers important events of Webster's life and the American Revolution) as well as "More About Noah Webster" (also located in the back and includes more fun facts about this patriot). If you want to learn about the man who defined America, read Noah Webster & His Words by Jeri Chase Ferris!
