For God is everywhere.

When Jonah hid beneath the deck,

God found him hiding there."

Alice is reading her illustrated Bible when, suddenly, a dove appears carrying a note with a special message, "'Reading is the special key, To take you where you want to be.'" With those words, her Book enlarges into a giant screen and Alice walks through to experience Jonah's story with her very own eyes! Jonah has just received a message from God to go to the people of Nineveh and call the people to repent. The prophet, however, refuses and runs away. How will God respond? Will Jonah see the light? An Alice in Bibleland Storybook: Jonah by Alice Joyce Davidson introduces young readers to the prophet Jonah in an unforgettable way!

My mother got this series for my siblings and me when we were younger, and how we loved them! Each book starts the same with Alice going to see the person or event she was reading about. The writing is in rhyme and readers are given the added bonus of looking for Alice and her dove companion who appear in most of these vintage illustrations. Alice eventually returns home and mulls over what she learned from her adventure. Each book can be read as a stand alone. In The Story of Jonah, the author summarizes and thoughtfully weaves the themes of obedience, God's Omniscience, and forgiveness throughout this book.

Note

"Thought Jonah, 'I don't like them.

I won't warn them. I won't go.

I'd rather disobey an hide

Than help folks I don't know!" (Emphasis added by me).

It turns out that Jonah did know the people that lived in Nineveh (not personally, of course). The city was the capital of one of Israel's enemies, the Assyrians. Scholars believe that this is one of the reasons Jonah was angry that Nineveh wasn't destroyed.
