Life Savers by Eryl Nash

“Pack your thermal-imaging camera, grab your walkie-talkie, and get ready to spend a day with 12 everyday heroes, saving lives around the world.”

Ages: 4 - 8

Grade Level: Preschool - 3

Pages: 32

A paramedic from Switzerland, an aid worker from Italy, a mountain rescuer from France - these are just some of the emergency service workers you'll meet. Based on real individuals, the book will introduce readers to 12 everyday heroes and what "a day in the life" looks like for each. Whether it's rescuing someone trapped high in the snow-covered mountains, treating a very sick kitty, or handing out supplies and food to a community impacted by disaster, these people aim to help as much as they can. Life Savers: Spend a Day with Real-Life Emergency Service Heroes by Eryl Nash is an informative and inspiring read as well as a very good introduction to the many careers in emergency services.

Each "A Day in the Life" chapter explains in the worker's own words what they do. The accompanying illustrations include a portrait of the person in their gear; several illustrations showing them at work; and a collection of thought-fully laid out, smaller illustrations listing related equipment, vehicles, team members and more. There is also a small section titled, "My Most Important Tool" where the hero highlights their favorite or most depended-on tool.

I also recommend checking out the back content. "Community Life Savers" highlights other ways people help their community (ex: Soup Kitchen Servers). "Acknowledgements" has real photographs of the individuals featured in the book. "Resources" is a curated list of links with accompanying descriptions from the author in which he encourages younger readers to "explore with an adult." Finally, there is "Further Reading" which is a curated list of book recommendations.
