Oh, how she loved the sea! So imagine Ida Lewis' delight when her father becomes the new lighthouse keeper of Lime Rock. Lewis eagerly partakes in her father's duties such as learning to row and keeping the lighthouse's light clean and bright. As she works with her father, he tells her stories of drowning sailors and rescues. He also tells his daughter what to do if she has to deal with such an emergency. Good thing Ida Lewis was paying attention, because the day is coming when she will have to recall those lessons. The Bravest Woman in America by Marissa Moss (a picture book) is about a young hero and how she began the work that would earn her the title of "Bravest Woman in America."

This book is a must read! The author presents Lewis's story in an easy-to-follow, narrative format. The painted illustrations are dynamic and colorful. There's an "Author Note" in the back with more details about Lewis' life after the events of the book.
