Expedition Backyard by Rosemary Mosco

Updated: Feb 12

"It's time for ADVENTURE - in your own backyard!"

Ages: 4 - 8

Grade Level: Preschool - 3

Pages: 128

"GUESS WHAT TIME IT IS!!" shouts Vole as she scampers into Mole's burrow every morning to wake up her best friend. Why, it's adventure time, of course! The two set off into the great outdoors - asking questions, observing, and drawing all that they see. Mole loves these expeditions and hopes that things will stay the same forever. A comic about friendship and going out to adventure in nature (with a minor theme about how changes can be good), Expedition Backyard: Exploring Nature from Country to City by Rosemary Mosco is the perfect comic to get your kids excited about having their own outdoor adventures.

This comic had me wanting to go on my own nature adventures! The art style is so cute and I love the way that the adventure theme is incorporated throughout the entire book. For example, each chapter is titled "Expedition" (not chapter) and each expedition includes a 2-page spread that resembles a map, showing the readers the animals, plants, and things that the adventurers come across. The comic book includes activities (written by the characters) at the back: "How to Draw Mole" and "How to Draw Vole" (a visual, step-by-step guide), "How to Keep a Nature Journal", "How to Stop Birds From Hitting Your Windows", "How to be the Best Cat Owner Ever", and, lastly, "How to Compost at Home."
