"...these men are dressed for colder, stranger places. They walk with stiff and awkward steps in suits not made for Earth."

It had never been done before, which means they would be the first. Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. Aldrin are chosen to be the first humans ever to land on the moon. Utilizing beautifully done illustrations and poetic language, Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11 by Brian Floca brings to life this epic quest of humans attempting to reach "...the Moon, cold and quiet, no air, no life, but glowing in the sky."

This book is one of my favorite picture books of the year! Floca draws the reader in by inviting them not just to see but to listen by using poetic language, powerful imagery, and sounds. This book also does a wonderful job of capturing the emotion and thrill of the journey. The front flap has an illustrated timeline of Apollo 11's journey which contains diagrams and more technical details of the flight (including bolded vocabulary terms). The content located in the back flap is titled "One Giant Leap" and gives context to the historic mission (the history and motivations, the how with details about the spacecraft, the aftermath of the flight, etc.).
